No date has been set for the swearing-in of the recently appointed eleven Justices of the Supreme Court, according to the National Judicial Council, or NJC.

The Council stated that it was not the source of the alleged news that a media outlet with its headquarters in Abuja suggested on Monday, January 16, for the Justices’ inauguration.

According to a statement released by the NJC’s Director of Information, Barrister Soji Oye, neither the Council nor the Chief Justice of Nigeria, Hon. Olukayode Ariwoola, who chairs the NJC, wrote or approved of the alleged date.

The NJC stated that the date of the Justices’ swearing-in will be made public at the proper time, but it asked the public to ignore the news.

“The National Judicial Council has been alerted to a trending story allegedly informing the public that the newly appointed 11 Supreme Court Justices would be sworn in on Monday, January 16, 2023,” the NJC statement said in part.

“The Council firmly refutes the report through this channel, since it did not originate from the Council or the Office of Nigeria’s Chief Justice and National Judicial Council Chairman, Hon. Justice Olukayode Ariwoola.

“At the proper time, the date of the Justices’ swearing-in will be announced. The people should kindly ignore the news that is trending.
