Amidst the recent surge in fuel pump prices, reaching N617 per litre, the federal government has expressed a firm commitment to collaborating with the private sector to facilitate the accessibility of electric vehicles (EVs) for Nigerians.

During a Validation Workshop of the Draft National Action Plan for the Development of EVs in Nigeria, Jelani Aliyu, the Director-General of the National Automotive Design and Development Council (NADDC), highlighted this development. According to Aliyu, the introduction of EVs will address the challenges commonly associated with conventional petrol-engined vehicles.

He emphasized that EVs offer greater affordability compared to their petrol-powered counterparts. This is due to the absence of components prone to issues in traditional engines, such as engine oil changes, pistons, plugs, and crankshafts.

Aliyu stated, “An EV is a machine that eliminates the typical problems encountered in traditional petrol or diesel engines. With no need for engine oil changes, pistons, plugs, or crankshafts, the total cost of ownership over the vehicle’s lifetime is significantly lower.”

Previously, we reported the increase in fuel pump prices from N539 to N617 per litre.
