NANS threatens to shut down Nigeria
The National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) warned the federal and state governments on Thursday that an impending student uprising could result in a total shutdown of the nation if the nationwide increase in tuition fees is not immediately reversed.
The announcement was made by Comrade Usman Umar Barambu, the national president of NANS, during his remarks at the inaugural North-East Zonal Senate meeting of NANS, which was held at Bauchi’s Abubakar Tatari Ali Polytechnic (ATAP).
The rise in tuition prices, according to Barambu, has badly impacted students, particularly those from low-income houses who are still able to manage and struggle to attend school. The student body is not happy with the change, he observed.
He stated that the majority of parents today find it challenging to raise their children and pay for their wards’ school fees, adding that the increase in the fees is an additional strain for them.
The NANS President stated, “We will provide the instruction on how to proceed very shortly. Nothing will move until our demands are addressed and met; we will fully shut down the nation.
“The cost of tuition must be reduced to reflect the nation’s current economic circumstances. There isn’t any money available right now, and it’s hard for parents to raise the money right now without mentioning the increased cost.
Barambu bemoaned that political figures who should be standing up for the people in opposition to the nation’s proposed hike in tuition fees are doing nothing about it because it doesn’t affect them.
“Some governors raced to the Supreme Court during the current Naira note crisis to stop its introduction, and they were successful. There are now plans to raise tuition costs, but no one is talking about them because their children are studying abroad and do not have any direct impact on them.
The entire nation will soon be shut down, but we won’t block the roadways because our parents’ plight will be the one that suffers. The NANS President declared, “We will close every airport in the nation because that is where it would hurt them the most.
