President Bola Tinubu of Nigeria has emphasized the commitment of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) to reestablishing democracy in Niger Republic. Tinubu made this assertion during his concluding statements at the second ECOWAS extraordinary summit convened in Abuja on Thursday.

The primary focus of the summit was the political deadlock in the land-locked nation, stemming from the military junta’s defiance of the ECOWAS deadline to reinstate President Mohamed Bazoum.

Following comprehensive discussions, the regional bloc collectively decided to deploy standby military forces with the aim of reinstating constitutional order in Niger.

In his capacity as the ECOWAS chairperson, Tinubu remarked, “Our display of steadfast membership, unwavering dedication, and deep patriotism underscores our acknowledgment of the critical situation facing our neighboring nation, Niger.” He highlighted the summit’s outcome as evidence of the potency of collaboration and unity, reaffirming the shared commitment to the people of Niger and the broader ECOWAS community.

Tinubu further underlined, “We remain unswerving in our pledge to assist Niger in its pursuit of a harmonious and stable democratic environment within the country.” He acknowledged that the proposed course of action might encounter challenges but expressed optimism that the collective strength of the bloc will enable them to “successfully navigate these hurdles and chart a course toward enduring tranquility and prosperity for the citizens of Niger and the ECOWAS region.”
