Nigerian physicians set a condition for returning to work
The Obafemi Awolowo University Teaching Hospital chapter of the Nigerian Association of Resident Doctors (NARD), led by Dr. Anthony Anuforo, has reassured Nigerians that their ongoing strike will be resolved once the Federal Government fulfills its salary obligations.
In an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Ile-Ife, Dr. Anuforo provided this assurance. He stated that the Ile-Ife branch of the association has been in discussions with the university management since March 2023, highlighting the issue of unpaid salaries, with some doctors being owed since January 2023.
Dr. Anuforo expressed his appreciation for the previous interim management of the association, which made efforts to address the salary payment issue. He pledged that his team would continue to build upon those efforts.
He stated, “I believe that the strike will serve as a catalyst for the Federal Government to expedite the payment of salaries and other allowances. The government should prioritize the health sector by increasing the budget allocation for healthcare. When the government takes care of the association’s members, the doctors, in turn, will be able to take care of the patients.”
During the strike, only consultants are currently attending to patients, as reported by NAN.
