Nasarawa Court Sets January 31 for Bail Bond Review of 30 Women and 8 Others in Protest Case
The hearing on the appeal to reconsider the bail terms given to 30 accused violent protestors and eight others who are currently being held at the Correctional Center is set for January 31 at a Chief Magistrate Court in Lafia, Nasarawa State.
Following their arrest by Nigeria Police officers for allegedly violating the terms of the peace agreement pertaining to the gubernatorial election contest, in which the Supreme Court ruled on Friday, January 19, in favor of Governor Abdullahi Sule, the demonstrators were charged and taken into custody.
On Wednesday, January 24, the accused individuals were first granted bail by Magistrate Mohammed Abdullahi-Lanze, who is in charge of the case.
Nevertheless, Barrister Ayiwulu Baba Ayiwulu, a defense attorney and attorney located in Lafia, complained to the court about the harsh bail requirements and asked for a reconsideration.
“We have petitioned the court to review the initial order requiring each defendant to produce a director and fulfill other bail requirements,” Ayiwulu said in a statement on Monday, outlining the goal of the motion.
“We suggested a new bail bond arrangement, stating that the House Committee on Judiciary Chairman, Hon. Esson Mairiga, has consented to serve as the surety for each and every woman.
“Justice will win out, and these women’s rights will be properly recognized.”
